SPOTLIGHT: The University Professional & Continuing Education Association's Annual Marketing Summit 2011
While we all know that, at a high level, today's business challenges across sectors are similar (human and capital resource constraints, getting buy in from upper management), the higher education sector is facing its own set of challenges, which were apparent at the University Professional & Continuing Education Association's recent Annual Marketing Summit. As an UPCEA Gold Industry Partner, we took part in the summit, and here are 3 key topics of discussion we heard:
1. New state compliance regulations will impact recruitment marketing efforts dramatically. So many of our education partners serve students in over 30 states, representing a large amount of revenue particularly for online and distance education. Students, of course, will be impacted the most. The challenges facing the institutions include the costs of applying and complying from both a business and branding standpoint, as well as the need to determine how to communicate with potentially impacted students who don't understand the laws and think that the school is not servicing them. With the use of social media today among students, this has the potential to have a negative impact on the institution's brand.
2. The potential of CRM to optimize and better utilize existing data by taking information out of departmental silos and consolidating it is becoming more widely recognized by higher education institutions as presenting a major opportunity for efficiency. A faster workflow process that makes jobs easier, makes response times for meeting students' needs quicker, and makes efforts that increase revenue more targeted, are motivators to try and find the resources to undertake this challenge.
3. One way to meet challenges in tough times is to be creative, but according to Kevin Coyne, coauthor of the book Brainsteering, brainstorming can be too unstructured and not very productive. Asking the right questions to steer thinking and better direct creative energy can be an alternative approach that yields the breakthrough ideas. This "thinking inside the box" theory as a way to productively and creatively find new ways to move forward was the topic of a highly interactive session at the seminar. More on brainsteering from Coyne in the McKinsey Quarterly HERE.

A Deep Dive with Marketing, Social Media and Community Manager, Shelley Shaw
Q: What are your favorite things about Pittsburgh?
A: Coming back after 23 years away, I'd say it's her changing face, the path she's on and the interesting people who have recently made her their home. And the deep connection and passion people feel for their sports teams - it's contagious.
Q: What's your favorite pastime? A: A Yankees or Lakers home game vs a top rival team, with lots of friends, food, and the noise and the energy of the crowd.
Q: Thinking of any film character, which do you identify with the most? A: Sharon Stone's character in Albert Brooks's The Muse. She gets that inspiration is easy to do - most just need a little listening, support and encouragement to get sold on themselves and go for it. And in the end, the inspired realize it all came from within.
Q: What is your most treasured possession? A: My iPhone - it's the world in my hand.
Q: What is your favorite motto to live by? A: Better your best.
