November 2011

Greetings!

As we mark our 25th year, we'll be sharing some special features with you each month. This month, Yvonne Campos has jotted down 25 of the most valuable lessons she's learned over time by starting and running our business. We continue with snapshots of Campos Inc team members so you can get to know our team a little better, plus stories of the early days at Campos Inc. Enjoy, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

A memorandum from the desk of Yvonne Campos
  1. Trust your gut.
  2. Have a clear yet flexible vision.
  3. Client retention is one of the best strategies a company can have.
  4. People like to do business with people they know and like.
  5. Help others. Share your time, your knowledge and your connections to help others, and watch them go to extraordinary lengths to help you.
  6. Hire people who have different smarts than you who can help fill any existing gaps in talent.
  7. Pay attention to your industry - the changes, the future. Be thinking ahead and quick to Yvonne Black & Whitemove.
  8. Give your employees the opportunity to fail in an environment that rewards effort and lessons learned from mistakes.
  9. Know the financial implications of business decisions. You need to understand the numbers.
  10. You can grow yourself right out of business.

A Deep Dive with Project Manager and Online Marketing Associate, BreAnn Decesere

Q: What's your favorite thing about Pittsburgh?

A: It would be the tie between the old and new in the city - old, historic buildings refurbished for new purposes - and the diversity of neighborhoods within the city and variety of restaurants and shops within each.

Q: If you were to show someone around Pittsburgh for the first time, where would you go first and why

A:  I would start at the Strip District and work my way down to the Cultural District downtown by the evening, especially if they love food like I do. There are so many great shops and things to see in the Strip that a lot of visitors pass over. For a less food-oriented route, I would say Station Square and the incline to Mount Washington or a look from the West End Overlook.

Q: Thinking of any TV/film character, who do you identify with the most?

A: Tina Fey/Liz Lemon, her character on 30 Rock - I love when a female can be light-hearted, sometimes even make a fool of themselves, and still be a strong figure in the workplace. She has her own sense of humor and gets what she wants in her own, somewhat backwards, way.

Q: What is your most treasured possession?

A: My memories, pictures and mementos from my trips abroad during college - I studied abroad in Rome and traveled all over Italy during my time there, a spring break trip that included Paris and a 4x4 excursion across Tunisia, and an international business course that traveled to multiple locations in China and Japan - including Beijing, Xian, Tunxi, Shanghai, Kyoto and Tokyo.
