The Problem Solving LaboratorySM
The
Purpose
The Problem-Solving Laboratory,
is a technique designed to systematically increase both the quantity and the
quality of new product/service ideas or solutions to
marketing/communications problems, which can then be taken to a more formal
evaluation process for refinement, development and marketing/communications
implementation.
It sharpens the focus upon our Real Customer Experience business
approach commitment, by way of your organization's distinctive and qualified
insights, as an important value-added component of your strategic
marketing approach and decision making process.
The Process
The Laboratory methodology consists of a highly disciplined
sequence involving problem definition, opportunity “brainstorming,” and
categorization of possible solutions. The “participants” in the
Laboratory represent the content portion of the possible solutions
as they rely upon their collective experience, expertise and hidden
creativity to associate in the brainstorming activity. The “facilitator”
represents the process portion of the Laboratory. His function
is to make sure that participants stay within the “rules” of the
methodology; that the ideas generated are documented and categorized; that a
series of “next steps” are reached; and that everything proceeds and ends on
time. The Laboratory typically runs from 1 to 3 days, but can
be modified to be used successfully in as limited as a one-day session if
time and cost are an overriding business factor.
The Players
The Laboratory is conducted with groups of 5–8 persons from
the organization which “most closely share the problem and most directly
take responsibility for the solution.” Tim Tassone is a certified
facilitator of this technique that has been used successfully by several
major industrial, financial services, and consumer packaged goods companies
inside and outside of the Pittsburgh marketplace.
